Junior Akampulira, the registrar NIRA Kabarole and Bunyangabu  districts has advised People With Disabilities(PWD) who missed registration of getting National identification cards at sub county levels to go to NIRA office and register.

This comes after the exercise flopped and PWD from Kabarole district failed to turn up for registration at sub county level.

Akampulira says that the exercise of registering PWD in Bunyangabu district  is still on at sub county levels  and will end 4th March 2022. He thus calls  upon people with disabilities from this district to embrace the activity, saying that it is for their own benefit.

Meanwhile, the government of Uganda started registering people with disabilities to get National identification cards to enable them to benefit from government programs like Parish development model, Social assistance grants for empowerment , Emyooga among others.

According to the Uganda Registration Bureau of Statistics report of 2016, 12.4% of Uganda’s population lives with some form of disability reflecting to 4.5 million people.

Country wide, only 0.5% of the people with disabilities have national identification cards which means the greater percentage do not have access to benefit from government programs.
