As Uganda fronts Agriculture for main source of Income, Christians in Kamwenge Deanery, Fort Portal diocese, are expected to transform from garden to mouth (subsistence agriculture) to garden to market( Commercial Farming) agricultural status.
Kamwenge gets Tractor
Yesterday, March 18, 2023, the ordinary of Fort Portal diocese, Rt.Rev.Dr.Robert Muhiirwa Akiiki, handed over a brand new tractor Reg.no.UG 2966A with it’s respective guidelines to Fr.Domnic Tumusiime Parish priest Kicwamba on behalf of Kamwenge Deanery to aid in extensive farming.
The tractor, is one of the three tractors donated to the Church by Hon.Frank Tumwebaze under the ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, in support of commercialised Agriculture within the region.
Kamwenge Ready to embrace the initiative
Fr.Dominic Tumusiime, on behalf of the Kamwenge Deanery, lauded Bishop Muhiirwa for his thoughtfulness, saying that no doubts the initiative will foster Agricultural development in the areas of Kamwenge,Kahunge,Kicwamba, Kitagwenda, Nyakasura, Bisozi and Biguli parishes.
Notably to him, Agriculture is the overall backbone for the areas within the Deanery, and thus produce and income are expected to increase with the aid of the given tractor.
Fr. Tumusiime, further explained that the tractor will be stationed at Kamwenge Parish, but every one in the Deanery is eligible to access it on appointment.
” Those who want the tractor will always get it from the Deanery which is Kamwenge. This will be through their respective Parish priests who will always liaise with the Dean Fr.James Isabakaki” Said Fr.Tumusiime
Church on the move to support people get out of abject poverty
The Agricultural officer Fort Portal diocese, Fr Taddeus Tusiime, mentioned that he is glad the Ministry of Agriculture reached out to the church to encourage Commercialised farming by giving out the tractors.
” The Ministry of Agriculture was wise enough to reach out to the church with these facilities because for us as the church we reach out to that remote person. So the tractor is not a property for parishes but it’s for all farmers in the deanery as long as they can afford the maintanence costs” Revealed Fr.Tusiime
He further explained that the diocese will be facilitating the person who operates it. This very person, was also trained by the government to operate it
Much as the diocese facilitates the labour, farmers intending to use the tractor, will have to pay some amount of maintaining the facility.
Agriculture in the diocese
Fr.Tusiime, revealed the most grown crops in the diocese as Maize and coffee, and that the diocese anticipates to extensively increase Coffee growing in the near by future.
