Tensions are rising in Muhokya, Kigoyera Sub-county, Kyenjojo District, as residents accuse the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Ayesiga Julian, of siding with individuals who allegedly sold off community land in a controversial transaction.
The land in question, tied to a 1998 agreement, was originally used by the local community for agricultural activities, including banana farming and alcohol production. The income from these activities, along with 25% of the revenue they received from the sub-county, was used to purchase the land.
Friday Patrick, one of the original signatories to the agreement, claims he was among those who signed when the land was bought. However, he alleges that he was arrested and tortured by security forces acting on the RDC’s orders, forcing him to consent to the sale of the land. He now lives in fear, concerned for his safety.
Local Leaders Speak Out
Local leaders, including area councilor Bworimunsi Vasta and Emmanuel Kasaija, maintain that the land was intended for communal development, especially for a school. Kasaija strongly condemned the RDC’s apparent disregard for a previous agreement between Swizen Kasumba and the school’s parents.
District Councilor, Ruth Kezabu added her voice to the concerns, pointing out that even leaders are now fearful of arbitrary arrests. She stressed that the land belongs to the entire community, not to any individual.
LC3 Chairperson, Enock Byaruhanga, promised to take further action, accusing the RDC of bias. He stated that local leaders are currently planning their next steps, as it is clear the RDC has taken sides in the dispute.
When reached for comment, RDC Ayesiga Julian defended her actions, asserting that the land legally belongs to the six individuals who initially signed the agreement, not the entire community.
As tensions continue to rise, residents are now urging the government to intervene swiftly to ensure a fair resolution and protect the interests of the community.
