The Bishop of Fort Portal Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Robert Muhiirwa, has commenced a two-day pastoral visit to Holy Trinity Kitagwenda Parish, during which he confirmed 468 Christians at St.Micheal Kayanga Buryansugwe Sub-Parish.
Kayanga Opened as a Eucharistic center
Following the confirmation ceremony, the Bishop officially opened St. Michael Catholic Church Kayanga as a Eucharistic Center and installed three catechists as acolytes, to help in distribution of the Holy communion as extraordinary ministers.
Be guided by the Holy Spirit
In his homily, Bishop Muhiirwa encouraged the newly confirmed to remain open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, whom they received through the sacrament of Confirmation marked by the Holy Chrism on their foreheads. He emphasized that this same Spirit helped the cardinals during the recent conclave to choose next pontiff, Pope Leo who was less known, following the death of Pope Francis.
The Bishop also urged the newly confirmed to embrace church movements and to regularly receive the sacraments of Penance and the Eucharist and the entire congregation to embrace Eucharistic adoration, now made possible at their new center. He highlighted that this devotion can be practiced individually, within families, small Christian communities, and church movements, especially to pray for peace, vocations, and renewed hope during this Jubilee Year.
Family Based Church Movements
Bishop Muhiirwa encouraged Fr. Joseph Amanyire Bikongotero, the Parish Priest Kitagwenda, to initiate family-based movements such as the Catholic Men Association and Catholic Women Association (CANA), to help nurture peaceful and faith-filled households.
Mr. Didas Nimusiima, Chairperson of Laity Council at Holy Trinity Parish, praised the growing faith in the area, noting an increase in the number of confirmands from 398 in 2023 to 468 in 2025 at Buryansugwe Sub-Parish.
Anticipating a parish
As the sub-parish continues its preparations for potential elevation to full parish status as per their request, Mr. Nimusiima requested the Bishop to consider assigning them a resident priest to guide ongoing developments, including the construction of a priests’ residence.
Fr. Amanyire expressed gratitude to the Bishop for his pastoral visit, for confirming the faithful, and for responding to the spiritual needs of the community by establishing a Eucharistic Center. He encouraged the newly confirmed to remain committed to their faith, calling them the future defenders of Catholicism in their generation.
Kayanga Parishioners, expressed gratitude to the Bishop for the Eucharistic center, saying he has saved them from traveling long distances to access the Blessed sacrament.
