Ten people have been confirmed dead in Kyenjojo District following a collision between a bus and a taxi carrying mourners, an incident that happened in the wee hours of Wednesday August 28 2024 at Kaihura trading center a long the Fort Portal-Kampala Road.
According to Rwenzori West Region Police spokesperson, SP Vincent Twesige, the crash involved a Pokopoko Bus, registration number UBE 807T, and a Toyota Hiace Taxi, registration number UBR 812G. The bus was traveling from Kampala, while the taxi was headed from Fort Portal to Kampala.
About the accident
Preliminary investigations suggest that the taxi driver lost control and crossed into the bus’s lane, resulting in a head-on collision. The taxi operator and nine passengers, including eight men and two women, were killed.
Regional and District Traffic Officers have inspected the scene, and the bodies have been taken to Kyenjojo Hospital for postmortem examinations. The wreckage of the vehicles has been towed to Kyenjojo Central Police Station, where investigations are ongoing under reference number TAR 117/2024.
The Deceased
Those that perished in the Kaihura accident have been identified as Byarugaba James, Rwobucence Fred, Tumwine James, Bamuhiga, Kamureba Najera, Noreda Machati deus, Rugurira , Mashijja Moses and a male Driver whose particulars havenot yet been known.
Survivors Nsinikweri Medard, Natuhwera Benjamin, and Tumwijukye Fatima sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment at Kyenjojo Hospital.
The deceased and survivors according to PRO Vincent Twesige, were residents of Ntungamo Municipality, Ruhama Sub-County, who were heading for a burial in Hoima.
Drivers cautioned on road safety
Twesige, who attributed the accident to reckless driving by the taxi driver, stressed the importance of road safety urging all drivers to be careful while on roads.
Recently, Rwenzori West has registered an increase in the number of road accidents, some thing that has been linked with careless driving.
