The clergy of Fort Portal Diocese have solemnly renewed their priestly vows, publicly reaffirming the commitments made at their ordination. This gesture symbolized their enduring dedication to their spiritual calling and ministry.
The renewal took place during the Chrism Mass celebrated at Virika Cathedral Fort Portal City, presided over by Bishop Robert K. Muhiirwa Akiiki, in the presence of Bishop Auxiliary Emeritus Joseph Sabiiti Mugenyi Apuuli.
At this Mass, three holy oils of Chism, the Sick and Catechumens were consecrated and blessed respectively, and thereafter they will be distributed to parishes to be used in the sacraments and other liturgical functions throughout the year.
The Bishop however explained that Chrism Mass is typically celebrated on Holy Thursday morning showcasing the unity between the bishop and priests, but due to the busy schedule ahead, the Diocese decided to mark it today Tuesday, an earlier day in the same Holy week.
Living by their preachings
In his homily, Bishop Muhiirwa called upon both clergy and lay faithful to deepen their commitment to the priesthood of Christ, reminding the congregation that while ordained priests take on a prophetic role at ordination through the ministerial priesthood, lay Christians also share in the universal priesthood through Baptism and Confirmation.
The Bishop congratulated the priests on the renewal of their vows and urged them to continually reflect on the Eucharistic sacrifice they offer daily. He emphasized the importance of aligning their lives with the Word of God, living as examples of faith, and extending compassion by listening to the faithful, particularly in the Sacrament of Penance, as a way of restoring hope.

Fort Portal’s local ordinary also encouraged the wider Christian community to actively engage in the liturgy, and arrive early for Mass, on top of participating fully rather than leaving it solely to the clergy and choir.
Holy Week
As Holy Week continues, Bishop Muhiirwa appealed to all believers to promote harmony, avoid domestic violence, jealousy, and hatred, and seek reconciliation with God and one another. He linked this message to the Jubilee Year of Hope declared by Pope Francis, encouraging the faithful to be beacons of hope in their communities.
He referred to the Uganda Episcopal Conference letter titled “The Truth Will Set You Free” advising believers to utilize it for proper guidance as they head for the uneasy political season.
Priests Commended for Faithful Service
The Head of Laity Mr. Charles Kulibanza, commended the priests for their renewed commitment and faithful service. He also urged the faithful to remain steadfast in their faith and nurture their relationship with God throughout the Holy Week, as reflected in the day’s celebration.
Representing the government, Kabarole District Chairman, Richard Rwabuhinga praised the clergy not only for their service to the Church but also for their strong partnership with government programs, particularly in education and health, highlighting the Church’s role in donating land for schools and hospitals.
He encouraged the community to celebrate Easter responsibly, while remaining mindful of public health concerns such as the ongoing presence of HIV/AIDS in the region.
