The Bishop of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Robert Kasaija Muhiirwa Akiiki, has attributed the prevailing moral decay among the youth in Kitumbi Parish to parental negligence.
The Bishop was on Wednesday responding to the speech of the Parish priest, Kitumbi, Fr. Jude Kasaija, and the District Chairperson, Richard Rwabuhinga, citing a surge in teenage pregnancy, school dropout rates, and unemployment in the region.
According to Muhiirwa, the issue originates from parents’ failure to cooperate in raising their children collectively and neglecting them to grow up in an unregulated environment.
Explaining about the pivotal role that fathers do in nurturing their children, Muhiirwa who urged parents to recognize their parental roles in nurturing holistic children, talked directly to absent fathers neglecting their role asking them to consider turning a new leaf on the matter.
His Lordship Muhiirwa further discussed the low educational enthusiasm among parents, urging them to stop abandoning children in Universal Primary Education (UPE) and Universal Secondary Education (USE) schools, but instead embrace their responsibilities for other scholastic materials.
He emphasized the importance of parents cooperating with teachers in terms of facilitation to bring out the best in students.
”Stop abandoning your children in UPE and UCE schools for the government. The government will not provide every thing for your children. You need to buy enough scholastic materials and facilitate teachers to deliver quality education to your sons and daughters.” Noted Bishop MUHIIRWA
The Bishop, who was finalizing his confirmation visit to Kitumbi parish in Kabarole district, confirmed a total of 678 candidates from Karugutu Sub-Parish, 207 from Harugongo Sub-Parish, and 409 from Butulya, Saaka, and Kitumbi
