Residents of Mujunju I zone in Mujunju parish, Kibiito sub-county, Bunyangabu district, yesterday came together for a community effort aimed at repairing a deteriorated bridge situated at Nyakitunga stream.
Last year, during the rainy season, the bridge succumbed to the elements, leaving the road impassable and causing significant disruptions to the daily lives of residents. The subsequent flooding impeded access to essential amenities such as markets, schools, and agricultural fields.
Responding to the pressing need, Clovis Musobozi, a resident of Mujunju I, disclosed that through the concerted efforts of the Mujunju Development Forum (MDF), they managed to procure eight culverts from a generous donor, Elias Muhimbise.
These culverts have been strategically placed at the bridge site to facilitate smoother movement of people and goods.
George Rwaheru, the chairperson of the Mujunju Community Development Forum, says that due to government failure to work on the road and bridge the decided to arrange community work so that residents can access their gardens and businesses especially this time when schools are opening for first term.
Expressing the community’s plea for long-term solutions, Rwaheru urged government intervention in the form of constructing a permanent bridge suggesting that such infrastructure would not only facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce to markets but also ensure timely access to healthcare facilities for residents in need.
Acknowledging the challenges faced, Allen Kyosimire, the female sub-county councilor for Mujunju parish, attributed the deficiencies in services to limited resources allocated in the sub-county budget.
Despite this, she remains optimistic about taking action once adequate funds are secured for the rehabilitation of the Nyakitunga Bridge.
