A group of 97 pilgrims from Bugombwa parish in the Bundibugyo district, under the Fort Portal Catholic Diocese, has embarked on their pilgrimage to Namugongo in Wakiso district to commemorate the Uganda Martyrs on June 3rd.
The pilgrims, who are currently resting at Rwamabare Catholic Church in the Ntoroko district after completing their first leg, were flagged off in the wee hours of today morning, on Pentecost day during a Mass at Bugombwa parish marking the end of a crusade.
Pilgrims urged to let the Holy spirit take lead
In his address at the flag-off Mass, Rev. Fr. Peter Mubunga from the Kasese Catholic Diocese urged the pilgrims to let the Holy Spirit guide them throughout their journey of faith. He also advised them to resist any temptations that may come along, stay focused on their goal, and have faith, before giving them his blessing.
Pilgrims adbere to advice on walking day
According to the leader of the pilgrims, Catechist Joas Bakatwika, the group has not encountered any difficulties so far and is adhering to security precautions by walking during the day.
These, are expected to cover a total distance of 378 km from Bundibugyo to Kampala on foot.
Notably, This year marks the first time the pilgrims are exclusively walking during daylight hours due to ongoing security concerns, including threats from the ADF.

This year 2024, Nebbi Catholic Diocese is set to animate the Uganda Martyr’s day at Namugongo Catholic shrine, and the organizers say they are working under a budget of around 1.9 billion Shillings.
About three days back, 700 foot pilgrims from various parishes across Nebbi Catholic Diocese were flagged off for a 450 Km Journey to Namugongo, by Archbishop Elect of Gulu Ecclesiastical Province, His Grace Raphael Wokorach. The day, will be marked under theme” As for me and my house we will serve the Lord”
