In a bid to promote environment-friendly green jobs in the country, the Natural Resources Defense Initiative-NRDI, a non-governmental organization based in Fort Portal Tourism City has opted to skill the youth in the City.
According to the executive director of NRDI Edgar Muganzi, they are now carrying out a six-month project with support from ENABLE, a Belgium Development agency.
Muganzi, revealed that NRDI is equipping the youth in market demand competencies of environment-friendly green jobs, such as compound designs, animal feeds making, biodegradable bag production, tree nursery beds management, and operations among others.
Manzi Ronald Rubogoya, a trainee with NRDI, said he has attained a lot of knowledge in compound designing thus noting it will help him in training other youth and income generation to their families.
Oliva Kenema, another trainee, says being trained as an artisan, will help her to make money and even to employ others.
About NRDI
We are located along Bundibugyo Road in Butebe, Kabarole District, South-Western Uganda. NRDI operates a community-based model, working through elected community leaders, local government structures, religious leaders and education institutions to implement sustainable environment conservation strategies.
NRDI runs a number of projects among which is; construction and promotion of Ecosan toilets, protection of water resources through community forestry with funding from Protos, Youths Skilling, Supporting the District Water and Sanitation Coordination Committees and promoting alternative livelihoods among natural resource dependent communities.
NRDI was started by young people with strong convictions in environmental protection and conservation.
