The Sanitary and hygiene situation is worsening for residents who sought refuge at Kanara Internally Displaced Camp in Ntoroko district raising worry of sanitary disease outbreaks if no intervention is made in time.
James Balikigamba the chairperson of the Camp says the misery which started in 2019 with more than 1,200 individuals displaced by flooding waters of Lake Albert has not spared them for all the time spent in the camp.
“Lack of food, Poverty, leaking houses, Diseases, lack of safe water, and lack of pit latrines have created fears of a cholera outbreak in the congested camp.” He Stated
Balikigamba, acknowledges that chances of a Cholera outbreak are high with the current rainy season due to the poor disposal of human waste in open spaces and bushes.
Over 1000 at risk of Cholera Outbreak
Out of 1,200 people that were allocated space in the camp in 2020, the majority have since exited due to poor conditions of living, specifically starvation. The camp currently hosts 220 individuals including women, children, and the elderly.
They appeal to the government to allocate them land where they can have permanent residence since they have no hopes of going back to their land that has since been occupied by the waters of Lake Albert.
