Responding to the flooding situation as schools opened for 3rd term, UNICEF has delivered 12 tents to six schools in Ntoroko district that are submerged in water.
The affected schools include Bweramule, Kabimbiri, Haibale, Kiranga, Budiba, Rwangara, Umoja, and Masojo primary schools among others. It all started after river Semuliki and Lake Albert burst their banks causing flooding that affected several private and public properties like homes, domestic animals, schools, health facilities, roads, and crops.
The government, through the Ministry of Education Games and Sports, allowed schools to open for 3rd term on Monday 16th September 2024 which is a promotional term, and candidates at both primary and secondary will write their UNEB Exams.
However, in the Ntoroko district, some schools were unable to reopen because they were severely affected by waters with most infrastructures submerged and destroyed. Affected schools are found in Bweramule, Kanara, Rwebisengo, AND Butungama sub-counties.
William Kasoro the LC5 Chairperson of Ntoroko district who appeals to the government to provide aid to the affected persons who are internally displaced expressed gratitude to UNICEF staff for the aid asserting that now schools that have benefited have a starting point.
He insists that more support for schools and learners is still needed to resume studies or else they lose the entire year.
According to UNICEF 3,269 learners from 11 floods-affected schools face uncertainty because classrooms were destroyed
