Dr. Bernard Bwambale a Nutritionist at Kabarole Research Center, says malnutrition in Tooro region is pausing a serious threat and concern.
Bwambale, has cited Fort Portal Regional referral hospital, which has admitted a total of 358 children suffering from under nutrition, in a short period of June to July this year.
Malnutrition categories
He explains, that malnutrition is categorized in two forms, including over nutrition where a person has excess nutrients in the body resulting into obesity, and under nutrition where someone has less nutrients that results into kwashiorkor, rapid loss of weight among others.
All the Non Communicable diseases, Bwambale notes are related to Malnutrition there by appealing to people to improve and focus on eating a well balanced diet for the betterment of their health.
Notably, 45% of the women of a reproductive age in the region are anemic, 50% of the children are also anemic among other indicators of malnutrition. The nutritionist adds that over 40.6% of the children in Tooro are stunted yet this is called a food basket.
Bwambale, attributes increased cancers to increased malnutrition statistics, Given the fact that people feed on to poor food that yield in them high blood pressure, heart diseases among others.
He calls on people to mind about the food they consume, on top of prioritizing they productivity of diverse foods in their farms, for home consumption.
The appeal was made at a Nutrition training for Fort Portal City Head teachers, organizers by Hon. Alex Ruhunda the MP Fort Portal Central Division, at His home in Kitumba.
Ruhunda, tasked the Head teachers to disseminate this information to the learners, the parents among others, for the good of reshaping people’s health in the society.
