Police in Fort Portal, is investigating circumstances under which one person died, after fire gutted a building in Ibale ward-central division Fort Portal on Sunday night.
Vincent Twesige, the Rwenzori west police spokesperson, identified the deceased as Rogers Baguma, a boda boda rider operating at the Fort Portal regional referral stage, in central division fort portal city.
Afande Twesige, states that preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased had left a candle burning through the night.
The same candle was left on a piece of wood, which later caught the motorcycle in the same house, burning the entire premise to ashes
Twesige, adds that police came following a distress call, but little or nothing could be done to save the house that was already burnt beyond recognition.
Baguma’s body has since been retrieved to the Fort Portal regional referral hospital pending postmortem before releasing it for burial.
Police warns on handling fire
The Rwenzori west police spokesperson, has however cautioned public on being reckless on how to handle burning items .
He notes that 60% fire incidences that have occurred in the region, have been due to recklessness among the public, who leave burning items like charcoal stove commonly known as sigiri, candles, and electric sockets on in the house.
