Couples from the CANA Movement, a Catholic family-based initiative in the Fort Portal Diocese, have successfully completed their week-long annual workshop across the Virika, Kamwenge, and Katoosa Deaneries.
The CANA Week concluded on Saturday January 11 2025, with Mass weddings held in the respective deaneries, where over 20 couples were united in Holy Matrimony.
This year, 205 couples from Yerya Parish in Virika Deanery, 155 couples from Katoosa Deanery at Kyarusozi Parish, and 150 couples from Wekomiire Parish participated in the CANA training with Eight couples getting married during a Mass wedding by Fr. James Burasa CSC, while another eight couples were wed at Yerya Parish by Rev. Fr. Gerald Akugizibwe, the Pastoral Coordinator of Fort Portal Diocese.
Couples Advised on Prayer and coexistence
In his address to the newlyweds at Yerya Parish, Fr. Akugizibwe encouraged them to always seek the intercession of the Holy Family of Nazareth as a model for peaceful and loving families.
similarly at the Mass wedding in Kyarusozi, Rev. Fr. James Burasa CSC, Parish Priest of Kyarusozi, reflected on the biblical account of woman being created from the rib of man. He explained that while the rib symbolizes strength, the flesh symbolizes vulnerability, urging couples to support one another in love and unity with Christ and the Holy Spirit. He emphasized the importance of couples striving to be pilgrims of good deeds and warned against the increasing greed for property, particularly after the death of a spouse.
Fr. Burasa likened marriage to a rose, beautiful yet with permanent thorns and withering leaves, advising couples that while problems may not entirely end in marriages, what truly matters is how they are addressed. He highlighted the importance of reigniting love in relationships, urging couples to surprise each other, spend quality time together in outings, and exchange surprise gifts.
CANA Uganda ranked the largest group
CANA couples who attended the workshop, praised the initiative, noting that it has played a significant role in fostering unity, trust, and eliminating domestic violence within families.
The last time CANA International visited Uganda in 2019 with Fr. Christoph Blin, CANA Uganda was recognized as the largest chapter in the world.
