Hundreds of Christians have yesterday gathered at Virika Cathedral in Fort Portal City to commemorate Palm Sunday, also known as the Sixth Sunday of Lent, the day that marks Christ’s triumphant entry into Jerusalem.
The Mass, led by Bishop Robert Muhiirwa Akiiki, was attended by a number of dignitaries, including Her Excellency Rt. Major Jessica Alupo, the Vice President of Uganda, and Hon. Rose Lilly Akello, Minister of State for Ethics and Integrity in the Office of the President, among others.
Call for Humility, Forgiveness and Trust in God
In his homily, Bishop Muhiirwa focused on four key lessons from the Passion of Christ, encouraging believers to cultivate patience, endure life’s hardships, and remain steadfast through betrayal and pain, just as Christ endured suffering with grace. He also emphasized the importance of emotional self-control in difficult times.
Bishop Muhiirwa further called for humility, especially among those in leadership. Reflecting on Christ’s humility during His entry into Jerusalem, he advised against pride and urged leaders to serve with humility rather than seeking praise.
The prelate, also highlighted the power of forgiveness, referencing the moment Jesus healed and forgave the man whose ear was cut off by Peter. He reminded the congregation to place their trust in God, even when facing overwhelming challenges, just as Christ did.
Vice President Jessica Alupo, who was the chief guest fulfilling her promise made at the Inauguration of Virika Cathedral that she would join believers in the very Cathedral before end of lent, praised Bishop Muhiirwa for his dedicated leadership and his collaborative spirit in working with the government.
She encouraged Christians to not only remain strong in their faith but also to actively participate in government programs such as the Parish Development Model (PDM) and Emyooga, which aim to improve livelihoods and reduce poverty.
Impressed by the large number of students present, the Vice President urged them to live by the motto, “The fear of God is the beginning of wisdom.” She further encouraged them to remain peaceful, work hard, and make the most of their time in school.
