Police in Fort Portal are investigating circumstances under which fire gutted charcoal and wood kiosks in Kabundaire market, leaving people’s businesses and property damaged.
The Incident
According to the Rwenzori West police spokesperson Vincent Twesigye, today at around 5:00pm fire fort brigade portal received an alarm call through the fireman informing them about a fire outbreak in Kabundaire cell, Kagote ward, Central Division Fort Portal City.
It is at this point that the fire brigade under the command of SP Mercy Ekyakunziire rushed to the scene, On arrival on the scene it was ascertained that indeed there was a huge fire that had covered one temporally building made of timber.
It was also discovered that that very temporary timber house, belonged to a one Wilson Ssekimba, who was staying in a uni-port located in the same place.
The building, had over around 20 rooms which were all occupied by tenants believed to have been operating different businesses including bars, video halls, pool tables, hotels, charcoal stores, fire wood stores among others.
According to police, the cause of the fire is suspected Arson as it was found out that the landlord’s uni-port was locked from outside yet the owners were inside sleeping indicating that the one who burnt the premises had an intent to burn the landlord too .
The fire also gutted the whole premise at once, an indicator that a fire accelerator like petrol was first spread all over before setting the fire.
However, police established that there was no death reported.
