Teachers of Arts in the Rwenzori region have joined a nationwide strike, demanding significant salary enhancements. The strike, which began on Friday, June 6, is led by the Uganda Professional Humanities Teachers Union.
Joseph Mugarura, the General Secretary of the Uganda Professional Humanities Teachers Union-Rwenzori region, expressed disappointment with the current compensation package for teachers. He emphasized that the profession’s value and importance are not adequately reflected in their salaries.
The striking teachers are seeking better pay to improve their welfare and enhance the quality of education. Mugarura noted that the lack of salary enhancement has led to demotivation and a sense of being undervalued, particularly compared to science teachers.
Mugarura expressed frustration with President Museveni’s stance on salary enhancement for teachers. The Arts teachers feel that their subjects are consistently undervalued, and the government’s inaction has resulted in disrespect from colleagues and students.
Until their demands are met, Arts teachers in Rwenzori say they will remain on strike, as they await further instructions from the national secretary general.
