There is need for government to increase the Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment (SAGE) from 25,000 to 100,000sh if older persons are to be supported fully and solve some of the financial challenges they face.
Retired Col. Steven Mwesige Basaliza who is aspiring for older persons MP promises to advocate for the increase in the funds and lowering of the beneficiaries’ age from 80years to 60years.
Addressing a press conference at DAJ guest House this morning, Col. Basaliiza decried the increasing discrimination and disrespect of the elderly in public places. He says in health centers, older persons are not given priority yet they are vulnerable to various diseases and infections.
According to Col. Basaliza, once elected as MP, he will advocate for increased funding to the health ministry and public service so that there could be elderly wards in all health centers and hospitals where they can be treated with dignity.
