Prices of scholastic materials in Fort Portal City have remained stable as learners across the country report back to school tomorrow for the first term of the 2026 academic year.
A survey conducted today morning by our reporter around Fort Portal City indicates that prices of items such as mathematical sets, pencils, books, and other school requirements have neither increased nor reduced.
Speaking to our reporter, Mr. Muhimbise John, a book vendor, said that despite the high cost of living, traders have maintained prices. He noted that a dozen of 48-page exercise books is sold at 5,000 shillings, while 96-page books range between 15,000 and 20,000 shillings.
Ms. Kemigisa Jacklin, who sells socks and other scholastic items, said a pair of socks costs between 3,000 and 5,000 shillings depending on size, while a dozen Nataraj pencils goes for 5,000 shillings. She added that mathematical sets are sold at between 3,000 and 5,000 shillings depending on the brand.
However, Kemigisa expressed concern that many parents are turning up to buy the items with less money than required.
In a related development, the Member of Parliament-elect for Burahya County, Mr. Joseph Mugenyi, has appealed to parents not to keep children at home as the new term begins.
In an exclusive interview with our reporter, Mugenyi warned that delaying children from reporting to school may affect their academic performance, noting that the term has already started late. He urged parents to ensure learners are provided with adequate scholastic materials
