Schools in Uganda have today 10th Jan 2022 resumed teaching after nearly two years of closure due to Covid-19.
However, in many schools which were visited by our reporter, security at the entrance was loose as all the attention was put on recording temperatures of visitors but not checking them for any suspicious explosion.
At Fort Portal SS the big gate which is closed on normal days was opened for cars and other vehicles to easily access the school premises without any checkup.
At Kabarole Adventist secondary schools, our reporters were asked to register in the visitor’s book and measured temperature and left to enter without bags yet bags were never checked.
Godfrey Byaruhanga, the school deputy head teacher Kabarole Adventist SS in charge of administration says that they are in the process of securing a metal detector to help in security issues.
At Buhinga Primary school, visitors were only measured temperature and allowed into schools with their bags and belongings but the school head teacher Mr. Erick Mugasa says they were going for a crisis meeting with the School Covi-19 taskforce to see how best to secure a metal detector and hand any suspicious case.
Schools have reopened in a time when the country has been experiencing different bomb blasts in different places, which puts a question on the safety and security of schools that are welcoming a lot of people amidst reopening.
