Sensitizing Public On Disease Prevention More Important Than Treatment-Nutritionist

BY SYLVIA

Following the worryingly increasing health detoriation in Ugandans, a nutritionist at KRC, Joshua Tumuhereza, has observed the  need  to sensitize public on disease prevention and management rather than treatment.

Tumuhereza, says many people are unaware of their health status and will only go for check up when they are seriously sick.

This  he warns, is a big problem to their lives.

During the Kabarole district Nutrition committee held at the district head quarters Kitumba, the district health educator, Catherine Kemigabo, noted the need for people to keenly observe their health.

She advises public to look out for blood pressure testing, diabetes and other diseases on a regular basis and eat well to avoid getting diseases resulting from poor diet.

Rev. Sarah Kakyo of Ruwenzori diocese,  and Waddell Stephen the District communication officer Kabarole, asked KRC to bring on board all the parents and sensitize them on nutrition issues during the Parents day meetings for proper knowledge on balancing the diet for their children.

The two,  revealed that much as  children get the knowledge and skills to prepare gardens at schools , the responsibility at home to prepare nutritious food belongs to a parent who needs thorough sensitization in the first place.

In response  to their request, Joshua Tumuhereza,  disclosed that plans are underway to start  house to house screening exercise.

He explains, that this will not only aid in  identifying the malnourished children, but also  help in establishing nursery beds at every school for children to get seedlings to take home for planting.

The final resolution, was such that r sensitization of  public can be via t radio programs and outreaches in schools for people to understand the importance of good nutrition.

Mean while, according the 2016 statistics, Ruwenzori region where kabarole and Fort Portal fall ,  the rate of stunted children stands at 40.6 percent which is alarming and yet Tooro is a food basket region.
