Kabarole District is grappling with a staggering 23% teenage pregnancy rate, sparking outrage among district leaders. Dr. Stephen Kalyegira, District Health Officer, reveals that this alarming trend has contributed to a significant increase in HIV cases, rising from 10.6% in 2022 to 11.8% in 2023.
The hardest-hit sub-counties are Kicwamba (30%), Harugongo, Hakibale, Karangura, Kasenda, Mugusu, and Kabende. Dr. Kalyegira urges all partners to join forces in sensitizing the community and youth to reverse this trend.
Steven Waddell Ainganiza, District Communication Officer, emphasizes the crucial role parents play in addressing this crisis.
“Parents must initiate open conversations with their children about reproductive health,” he stresses.
“While community dialogues and radio programs are essential, integrating sexual education into school curricula is vital to empower children with the knowledge to protect themselves in relationships.”
As the district battles this epidemic, one thing is clear: collective action is necessary to safeguard the future of Kabarole’s youth.
