In response to President Museveni’s enactment of the Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Bill, 2023, the Inter-Religious Council of Uganda, Tooro Region, is urging Mairungi farmers to transition to cultivating crops such as coffee, banana, and Hass avocado.
During a meeting convened at the United Pentecostal Churches International of Uganda in Kahungabunyonyi, attended by prominent religious leaders including Rt.Rev Rauben Kisembo Amooti the Chairperson, Rt. Rev. Robert Muhiirwa Akiiki, Bishop Jimmy Katuramu, Bishop Rusoke Richard, Sheikh Abdul Hakim, and Pastor Ategeka Pascal, the council emphasized the importance of diversifying agricultural activities away from mairungi cultivation.
Rt. Rev. Reuben Kisembo Amooti, the Chairperson, expressed concern over the rising incidence of drug abuse, particularly among youths, and its detrimental impact on mental health.
Additionally, the religious leaders denounced the escalating cases of theft and called upon perpetrators to repent. They also appealed to young people to reject involvement in immoral activities, including recruitment into groups like the ADF rebels.
