Officials of Tooro Kingdom, have dismissed media reports suggesting that they have plans to evict traders and vendors from Kacwamba market in Fort Portal city.
The incident
George William Katuramu, the Tooro Kingdom Minister of Lands, says that there has been a lot of backlash on media about Tooro Kingdom, with allegations of planning to evict hundreds of people operating from the Kacwamba Kingdom Land along the Fort Portal – Kasese Road.
While speaking to Jubilee Radio on Monday morning, Katuramu noted that all that has been circulating is false news aimed at tarnishing the image of the kingdom and King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukiidi the Fourth.
According to him, they do not have any plans of evicting people from the Kingdom land and that the kingdom cannot do such an act since Kacwamba market belongs to the people of Tooro, much as the land belongs to the Kingdom.
About the Market
Last week, Central division council led by Mayor Richard Muhumuza, confirmed that they had resolved to shift the Kacwamba market that operate on Sundays to Kasusu market because of the congestion at the market that cause traffic jam, blocking the road to Kidukuru and occupying even the Fort Portal Kasese highway yet Kasusu market was constructed by government and is not operational.
However Fort Portal City Council sitting last week resolved that the Kacwamba market stays due to public outcry and still operationalize the Kasusu market to raise revenue for the city.
