Mwenge South, the defending champions of the Tooro Kingdom MTN Amasaza Cup, have successfully kicked off their title defense with a 2-1 victory over Burahya county in the opening match of the 2024 edition.
The thrilling encounter took place yesterday May 26 at the Katoosa Playground in Kyenjojo district marking the beginning of an exciting tournament that aims to promote healthy living, sports development, and raise awareness about HIV/AIDS in the Tooro region.
Burahya scored the first goal, but Mwenge South quickly equalized with a goal by Sharif, making the score 1-1. The match promised to be a thrilling one and by 2nd half, Mwenge South had added another goal, making it 2-1.
The Tooro MTN Amasaza partnership 3rd edition , has gone beyond just football, as it is also providing HIV testing services to residents, supporting the End HIV by 2030 campaign led by Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru.
According to Aggrey Byaruhanga the MTN Marketing &Sales manager and Madina Nabawanuka the Territory manager, the partnership is committed to improving the health and well-being of the community through continued awareness and health camps via such gatherings.
Unlike last year, when the winners received 5 million Ugandan Shillings, this year’s champions will walk away with a total cash prize of 7.5 million Ugandan Shillings from MTN Uganda. This increased prize money is sure to add to the excitement and competitiveness of the tournament.
Owek.Micheal Wandera, the Minister of sports Tooro Kingdom, expressed gratitude to MTN Uganda for the commitment, increased funding and the teams for showcasing discipline.
According to Murungi Musobozi the team manager for Burahya County, the team is more organized and they are ready to correct the mistakes that costed them the title last year.
- He said that the squad has been training well and he had summoned the best players for the County and fans should expect the best.
The match, was witnessed by the Kyaka MP Tom Bright alongside other dignitaries.
