In a bid to eradicate malaria across the country, the government, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and TASO Uganda, has introduced a set of measures for individuals to adopt.
These measures include sleeping under treated mosquito nets, regular spraying, clearing bushes around homes, eliminating stagnant water, providing effective treatment, and continuous empowerment of stakeholders through education on malaria prevention.
During a one-day training session at Joe Palz Motel for cultural leaders, Agondeze Betty, the In-charge of Muchwa Health Center III in Fort Portal, emphasized the gravity of the malaria situation.
In her official opening remarks, she identified malaria as a leading cause of death, attributing it to miscarriages among pregnant mothers and school absenteeism.
Betty revealed that each visit to a health facility for malaria treatment costs over 30,000 shillings.
Expressing concern, Betty highlighted that Tooro Kingdom is struggling with malaria prevention, citing the misuse of government-provided mosquito nets for activities like chicken rearing and fishing by the majority of the population.
TASO Uganda officials stated that their outreach efforts have covered Bugisu, Bugwere, Bunyoro, Kasese, Acholi, Buganda, Busoga, and now Tooro Kingdom. The initiative aims to equip cultural leaders with the necessary knowledge to effectively prevent and eradicate malaria within their communities.
