Religious Leaders in Fort Portal , Rt. Rev. Reuben Kisembo Bishop of Ruwenzori diocese together with the Rt. Rev. Bishop Robert Muhiirwa Bishop of Fort Portal catholic diocese have decried the increased cases of HIV/AIDs.
The two Bishops, expressed this concern during the ecumenical way of the cross in Fort Portal city where thousands of Christians had gathered to commemorate Jesus’ crucifixion.
Bishop Kisembo, said that they were recently in the meeting organized by the King of Tooro where King Oyo doubles as a cultural champion for completely ending AIDs among young People by 2030. The two Bishops, received a report that HIV has increased with Kalangala leading followed by Kabarole
Bishop Kisembo, asked married couples to be faithful to each other and those who are single to be patient as one way of fighting the spread of HIV.
Bishop Muhiirwa also asked them to be faithful and also avoid alcoholism among other tempting behaviors like unnecessary visits, attributing the worrying increment to the laxity among residents.
He appealed to the youth to embrace the virtue of Purity as the best way of preventing the deadly disease . The youth, are cited to have the highest number of HIV/AIDs infections as compared to the other age groups.
HIV Prevalence.
The entire region of Tooro, currently stands at 14.6% with kyenjojo as a district standing at 7.3%, while the region stands at 5.5% at the national level according to the statistics delivered by Tooro kingdom to Bishop Muhiirwa.
According to the Uganda Aids Commission last report (2020), a total of 38000 No of New HIV Infections were recoprded,12000Men (15+) and 21000 Women (15+) ,5300 Children (0-14) and a total of 1400000 People living with HIV.
480000 are a number of Adult Men living with HIV, 820000 number of Adult Women living with HIV, 98000 Children Living with HIV, and about 22000 is recorded with Annual AIDS related Deaths, 8900 being Men (15+) 9100 Women (15+) and 4300 Children (0-14)
