Sports fans in Fort Portal have expressed their gratitude to the King of Tooro Kingdom for joining other leaders in urging the president to fulfill his promise of constructing Buhinga Stadium. However, there are concerns about the gate fee for the Masaza tournament finals this Saturday at Buhinga Playground.
Buhinga Construction Fate
The construction of Buhinga Stadium began in 2019, undertaken by the Engineering Brigade of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). Originally budgeted at 6 billion Shillings, the stadium was intended to include a football pitch, netball and volleyball courts, offices, dressing rooms, two gymnasiums, a clinic, and shops. Surprisingly, only a perimeter wall has been built to date.
During his 29th coronation ceremony last Thursday, King Oyo echoed the calls of other leaders for the president to expedite the stadium’s completion to promote sports in the Tooro Kingdom.
Regarding the Amasaza tournament, Burahya County will face Fort Portal County at Buhinga Playground on Saturday, September 21, with a gate fee of 10,000 shillings in cash or 5,000 shillings via mobile money which has raised concerns among fans.
Richard Muhumuza, a sports enthusiast and supporter of the Burahya team, expressed his appreciation for the King’s support but urged the tournament organizers to lower the gate fee to 5,000 shillings, arguing that the current price might deter fans from distant areas such as Kabende, Kijura, and Kasenda from attending.
Sarah Kengozi, another sports lover, suggested that the fee should be reduced even further to 3,000 shillings to allow more people to participate in the finals.
Fee to support Kingdom Projects
In contrast, Owek.Micheal Wandera, the sports minister of Tooro Kingdom, encouraged the public to pay the requested fee especially the reduced one via momo pay emphasizing that it would contribute to the Kingdom’s initiatives.
