Today, Karuzika was filled with joy and celebrations as King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV marked 29 years on the throne as the reigning monarch of the Tooro Kingdom.
Call to Rescue Ntoroko Residents
Addressing subjects and distinguished guests at Karuzika Palace in Fort Portal City, King Oyo appealed to the government for assistance to residents of Ntoroko District, which has been devastated by floods that claimed lives and left many people homeless.
The youngest reigning monarch worldwide, also urged his subjects to plant more trees as a measure to combat climate change to avoid possible similar challenges like those affecting Ntoroko.
Political Guidance Ahead of 2026 Elections
King Oyo, addressed concerns about the ongoing political season, warning that some individuals are attempting to damage the kingdom’s reputation for personal gain. He emphasized that any issues regarding land should be addressed through the proper channels at the land office, as no one has the authority to displace people from kingdom land.
Additionally, His Majesty Oyo, who accepted the role of Cultural Champion for HIV and AIDS among Young People in Eastern and Southern Africa on 8 September 2016, called on leaders at all levels to intensify efforts in combating the spread of HIV/AIDS, given the region’s high prevalence rates.
The 29th coronation ceremony began with a thanksgiving service at St. John’s Cathedral with Rt. Rev. Reuben Kisembo, Bishop of Ruwenzori Diocese, congratulating the King, with a call on kingdom officials to uphold and promote the kingdom’s culture and traditions.
He also called on the government to expedite the return of the kingdom’s assets and improve infrastructure, particularly the Fort Portal-Kampala road, which is in poor condition.
Bishop Kisembo, cautioned against creating additional cities while existing ones remain underdeveloped and criticized government officials for corruption and misuse of public funds. He highlighted the burden of heavy taxes on Ugandans without corresponding improvements in service delivery.
