Tragedy struck the community of Kacwamba in Fort Portal City today at around 11:30 AM, as a devastating accident on the Fort Portal-Kasese road near Spokane Hotel claimed four innocent lives.
About the accident
According to Rwenzori West Police Spokesperson SP Vincent Twesige, a black Toyota Harrier, Reg.No. UBD 926F, was reportedly speeding from the Kasese direction when it tragically struck a 40-year-old Annet Amanyire , a pedestrian and resident of the same area, who died instantly.
The vehicle then spiraled out of control, crashing into a blue Subaru Impreza N10, Reg.No.UAW 347L, causing the Harrier to roll violently, fatally hitting two young boys and siblings, Murungi Emmanuel, 10, and Mugisa Walter, 13, both residents of Kachwamba.
In its unstoppable path of destruction, the Harrier also collided with an electric pole before finally striking an unidentified man, who succumbed to his injuries shortly after reaching Buhinga Hospital.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver was recklessly heading from the Kasusu direction when the vehicle struck a woman crossing the Fort Portal-Kasese road.
Harrier Driver Detained
SP Vincent further stated that the driver of the Harrier, Kenneth Awany 23, a resident of Fort Portal City, is currently in police custody due to the preliminary investigations that suggest that overspeeding was the primary cause of the crash.
Police, led by ASP Atwijukire Bannet and Cpl Busigye Adolf, quickly responded to the scene. A rough sketch of the accident was drawn, and the bodies were taken to Buhinga Hospital mortuary pending postmortem. The vehicles involved have been impounded at Fort Portal Police Station as police continues with investigations.
This tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of overspeeding and the devastating impact it can have on innocent lives.
