The UPDF Fisheries Protection Unit (FPU) Lt. Col. Mercy Tukahirwa has embarked on sensitization meetings on Lake Albert to evaluate the fishing community’s adherence to regulations against illegal fishing.
The sensitization meeting held at Kanaara Landing site in Ntoroko District yesterday, that involved local leaders, fishing communities aims to address resistance within the community and seeking solutions to the ongoing issues at the landing site especially illegal fishing activities.
Lt. Lauben Ndifula, the spokesperson Fisheries Protection Unit says there is need for the fishing community to adhere to the established regulations aimed at preserving the Lakes ecosystem and sustaining fish stocks for future generations.
Lt Ndifula called on the fishing community to ensure responsible fishing practices and the consequences of illegal fishing activities on both the environment and livelihood.
Nsubuga Amis the Chairperson Kanara Landing Site demanded government to supply them with modern fishing nets saying the communities use illegal nets because they cant afford buying the recommended ones.
According to Nsubuga, they are tired of being harassed and getting arrested by the enforcement team because of their involvement in illegal fishing.
Akugizibwe Eriya Robert the LC1 Kanaara says there is a lot of illegal fishing methods as many people don’t have funds to buy the recommended nets.
