The Fort Diocese is proud to announce the successful completion of the much-anticipated Virika Cathedral renovation, a project that has taken one year to finish.
Today, the renovation works valued at about 3.6 Bn Shs, were officially handed over to the diocesan Bishop, Rt. Rev. Dr. Robert Muhirwa Akiiki, and the Renovation Committee Chairperson, MSGR Isaiah Mayombo, by the dedicated team at Ambitious Contractors.
Key Areas of Renovation
Msgr Mayombo shared that the renovation involved extensive improvements, including a new roof, flooring, and several other crucial upgrades, all of which came with a significant cost. He took a moment to commend the contractor for the high-quality work done throughout the process.
While the majority of the renovation is complete, Msgr.Mayombo highlighted that a few minor works remain, which are expected to be finished within the next month. Once these final touches are completed, the cathedral will officially open to the public on February 23, 2024, as promised by the bishop.
Eng. Deo Katekere Rubongoya, the Chairperson of the construction committee, also praised the contractors for their timely work, noting that it is rare for projects to be completed within the promised year. He assured the community that the renovation was worth every shilling, with the quality of the work clearly visible.
“The project has been delivered as expected, and we are confident in the value it offers.” He noted
Peter Odel from Ambitious Contractors also shared that the roofing materials used were of exceptional quality—Gage 24 iron sheets, imported directly from abroad. These sheets are known for their durability and strength, setting a new standard for construction quality.
“The materials used are top-notch, and we stand by our work.” Affirmed Odel
In his remarks, Rt. Rev. Bishop Robert K. Muhirwa Akiiki expressed his deep appreciation for both the contractors and the generous supporters who made the renovation possible.
“This project has been a collective effort, and we are deeply grateful to all who contributed.”
The total cost of the Virika Cathedral renovation project was approximately 3.6 billion shillings, and it has taken one year to complete. This marks a significant milestone for the Fort Diocese and the entire community, as they eagerly await the reopening of this iconic landmark of the unique Cathedral in February 2024.
Earlier last week, appearing on Jubilee Radio for his weekly Show Ekigambo Ky’omuliisa, Bishop Muhiirwa stated that there will be no Christmas prayers at Virika Cathedral this year as earlier anticipated.
He emphasized that there is no urgency to officially enter the cathedral, even after the contractors complete and hand over the renovated project.
“The church will take the necessary time to thoroughly assess whether the work meets the required standards before moving forward.” Stated Bishop Muhiirwa.
