Women have played a significant role in the development of the country due to improved gender equality, according to the Deputy Mayor of Fort Portal, Betty Mujungu.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with our reporter during celebrations of International Women’s Day, Mujungu said women continue to make major contributions in various sectors that drive the country’s growth.
She noted that women are actively involved in agriculture, leadership, business, and family welfare, which has greatly contributed to both national development and improved household incomes.
Mujungu explained that women form the majority in many markets and also play a visible role in sectors such as health services and financial institutions. She said their participation in these sectors has helped strengthen economic activity and support community livelihoods.
However, Mujungu pointed out that despite the progress made, women still face several challenges. These include sexual harassment in workplaces and homes, gender discrimination through stereotyping, and domestic violence.
She further urged both women and men to report cases of violence, noting that gender-based violence affects everyone in society.
Mujungu emphasized that reporting such cases will help authorities address the problem and ensure justice for victims.
