The Bishop of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Robert Muhiirwa, has encouraged young people to thank God for the gift of the elderly and to frequently seek their wisdom to navigate life successfully.
He delivered this message while preaching to a congregation at Kamwenge Parish, gathered to celebrate St. Joachim and Anne, the day of the elderly, at the event, which honors Jesus’ grandparents that saw many elderly individuals in attendance.
Bishop Muhiirwa who echoed Pope Francis’ message for the day, themed “Do not abandon me in my old age.” expressed concern over the tendency of the younger generation to disregard the advice of grandparents, often dismissing them for not being technologically savvy.
He urged the youth to respect the elderly, visit them, encourage them, and learn from their vast life experiences noting that while they may not be adept with computers, their wisdom and historical knowledge remain relevant.
The prelate also encouraged the elderly to remain strong and faithful in God despite any hardships they may face. He emphasized the need for the youth to change the negative narrative that the elderly are not important, recognizing the crucial role they played in raising their parents and listening to their needs, especially during illness.
Rev. Fr. James Isabakaki, the parish priest of Kamwenge, also addressed the youth, urging them to provide attention and support to the elderly as a form of relief in their old age.
He commended the Bishop for choosing to spend the day with the Kamwenge congregation and for gracing the Thanksgiving Mass for Thomas Aquinas Secondary School Kamwenge
