A free surgical camp at Fort Portal Regional Referral Hospital has given new hope to children living with limb deformities, with children receiving operation as King of Tooro Kingdom Dr. Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV celebrates his 34th birthday today
The health camp targeted children suffering from fractures, rickets, knee deformities, and chronic bone infections.
Speaking to journalist today at Fort Portal regional referral hospital, Tooro Kingdom’s Minister of Health, Dr. Tito Beyeza, a senior orthopedic specialist, confirmed that surgeries for the children and five adult was successfully conducted in February and April this year where 98 including 5 adults benefited
Dr. Beyeza said that in a gesture of compassion, King Oyo directed that what would have been traditional birthday gifts from subjects and well-wishers be redirected to help children with medical challenges.
He said that the Kingdom patterned with a team of Doctors from USA under Reach a hand of Mercy initiative led by Dr. Lanka Rodrigues and Doctors from Indian association in Uganda with However, Beyeza noted that alongside the ongoing free surgical outreach for children with limb deformities, the Kingdom has been running youth sensitization programs on drug abuse. The campaign was organized jointly by the Tooro Kingdom and the National Drug Authority.
The sensitization drives have focused on schools and Universities across the Kingdom, highlighting the dangers of substance abuse and promoting access to counseling and rehabilitation support.
Dr. Lanka Rodrigues of Reach a hand initiative said that they patterned with the Kingdom to operate the children born with deformities believing no children should be left behind in terms of health care
Harriet Nyakake the deputy prime minister of Tooro Kingdom said that the surgical health camp started Monday this week and ended today Thursday where the beneficiaries were from within Tooro Kingdom and the neighboring Kingdoms like Bunyoro, Obudingiya bwa Bwamba, Obusinga bwa Rwenzururu and Buganda
