Residents and local leaders in Fort portal city have expressed immense relief and excitement as construction finally begin on the long neglected Kagote – Saaka road following years of poor conditions and unfulfilled government pledges to upgrade it with tarmac
The vital 8km stretch connects the city to the Mountains of the Moon University, Saka Airstrip, Katojo Prison and Muhoti Barracks remained in a terrible state characterized by heavy dust and deep mud for decades
Pochi Christopher the LC2 Chairperson for Kagote ward noted that the commencement of the works marks a welcome end to decades of dusty and muddy conditions that have been affecting safe movement of motorists, students and businesses
He has applauded landlords who have voluntarily offered their land for road expansion following a formal request by government through ministry of works and transport
Over the years residents have held demonstrations, blocking the road with logs and digging trenches to protest the heavy dust during dry seasons and impassable mud when it rains
The Kagote-Saka road is highly critical as it handles heavy traffic, including military vehicles heading to the Muhooti Mountain Division headquarters, prison trucks to Katojo Government Prison, trucks carrying pozzolana from Kicwamba and Harugongo Sub County, local business men and women plus thousands of students commuting to the Mountains of the Moon University.
