The Bishop of Kabale Diocese, Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira, has cautioned Catholic priests against the growing influence of prosperity gospel teachings, warning that many Christians are being misled by promises of quick wealth and miracle solutions to poverty.
Speaking yesterday during the Chrism Mass at Our Lady of Good Shepherd Rushoroza Cathedral in Kabale Municipality, Bishop Rubaramira expressed concern over the increasing number of emerging churches attracting believers with messages that link financial prosperity to faith declarations, tithes, and donations.
He noted that some individuals, including former Catholic seminarians, are starting their own ministries and promoting doctrines suggesting that financial giving and positive confession automatically lead to divine blessings.
The bishop also raised alarm over practices such as the sale of so-called anointing oils at different prices, with promises of miracles and financial breakthroughs.
He challenged priests to examine why some Catholics are leaving the Church for such ministries and to develop lasting pastoral responses to address the trend.
Bishop Rubaramira attributed the appeal of prosperity gospel teachings to widespread poverty and desperation, urging clergy to guide believers toward practical solutions such as hard work, entrepreneurship, saving, and financial discipline.
He further called on priests to remain informed about global political ideologies and their impact, encouraging them to provide moral guidance and promote peace in a divided world.
