As the people of Tooro eagerly await the first coronation of Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as the 14th ruler of the Tooro Kingdom, the Chairperson of the Interreligious Council, Tooro Chapter, Rt. Rev. Robert K. Muhiirwa Akiiki, has appealed to the government to support the establishment of a Cancer Institute in memory of the late Omukama Oyo, who worked personally to improve the kingdom’s health sector.
Addressing the press at the Bishop’s House today evening.Bishop Muhiirwa said the proposed institute could serve as an extension of the Mulago Cancer Institute, which is currently overwhelmed by the large number of patients it hosts.
He also encouraged the people of Tooro to warmly welcome their new King, revealing that , in an earlier meeting with interreligious leaders, the Omubiito Edward expressed his readiness to serve the kingdom by putting the interests of the people first, guided by culture and Christian values. Bishop Muhiirwa called on the King to carry forward his cousin’s projects with dignity.
He also asked political leaders to refrain from divisive statements at the moment, but spread unity.
Bishop Joseph Sanyu of World Evangelical Ministries likewise urged the people of Tooro to cooperate with the new King in implementing the projects that King Oyo worked so hard to establish.
