Excitement has gripped Fort Portal City this evening as residents lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the new king of Tooro Kingdom, Omukama Edward Rukiidi Nyabongo I, as he passed through the city from Bunyangabu District to Rwengoma Palace.
The Omukama is expected to leave Rwengoma Palace today at 10 p.m. after performing cultural rituals before proceeding to Karuzika Palace in preparation for his coronation on Tuesday.
Speaking to Ronald Mutegeki, the Minister of Education in Tooro Kingdom expressed happiness and commended the people of Tooro for their love and support for their new king.
He said tomorrow’s coronation will be a memorable day in the history of Tooro Kingdom and invited all people to turn up in large numbers and celebrate with the new
Mutegeki noted that today’s trek, which is expected to last five hours, from Rwengoma Palace to Karuzika Palace, advised that, culturally, women are discouraged from attending the night ceremony.
Charles Balinda, a resident of Fort Portal, said he was happy that the kingdom was getting a new king, expressed hope that the new reign would revive the kingdom and contribute to its development.
Hindu Mugisa said the mood surrounding this coronation is different from that of previous coronation anniversaries.
She said that although residents are still mourning the death of Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, they are also happy that the kingdom is preparing to welcome another ruler.
President Yoweri Museveni is expected to be the chief guest at the coronation.
