Tooro culture and customs shone today at Karuzika Palace as Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I was officially crowned the 14th King of Tooro, following the death of his cousin, (Kabumba) Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who passed away last month.
In his maiden speech to thousands of Tooro subjects who had turned up for his coronation ceremony today, the Omukama reminded the people that the Tooro Kingdom belongs to the people and that everyone must be served without discrimination, even Karuzika Palace belongs to all.
He appreciated the Babiito clan for choosing him as the new King, hailed journalists for covering the events, and appreciated his mother, Omugo Yusta Asiimwe Kijanagoma, for the great role she has played in his life as he grew up.
The new King pledged to continue working hand in hand with cultural, religious, and political leaders for the development of Tooro, both culturally and economically.
Bishop Kisembo challenges King Nyabongo to stick to on one wife
The Bishop of Ruwenzori Diocese, Rt. Rev. Reuben Kisembo, has challenged the newly installed Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I to remain faithful to his wife and honour the marriage vows he made before God, reminding him that the Church of Uganda does not support polygamy.
The Bishop said the King’s marriage was not only a private family matter, but also an important part of the example he would set as a Christian and cultural leader.
He reminded King Nyabongo that leadership comes with responsibility and that his conduct would be closely watched by the people he leads.
The message came during a ceremony filled with celebration as the church formally welcomed and recognised the new King before his official installation.
Bishop Kisembo used the opportunity to also call upon the people of Tooro to respect their new King and support him as he begins his leadership.
The Bishop called for a clear distinction between the King’s personal property and property belonging to the kingdom.
