Government land across Uganda is increasingly being grabbed, encroached on and fraudulently titled, with some officials in the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development accused of facilitating illegal transactions, the State Minister for Lands, Harriet Ntabazi, has said.
Ntabazi said some high-ranking government officials with access to information in the ministry had acquired titles on public land, while others had illegally occupied government property and were using it for activities not authorized by the government.
She also accused some officials in the Ministry of Lands of deliberately issuing multiple titles on the same piece of land despite existing records indicating that the property belongs to the government.
Hon. Ntabazi made the remarks yesterday during a regional stakeholders’ engagement on the development of a comprehensive government land inventory organized by the Uganda Land Commission at Hoima Resort Hotel in Hoima City.
The minister said the government had embarked on a process of identifying, verifying, profiling, registering and titling all its land to protect it from illegal occupation.
She cautioned individuals occupying government land illegally to voluntarily vacate before enforcement measures are taken.
