The Fort Portal city Boda boda riders have vowed not to pay the proposed new tax on the country’s estimated 1 million to 1.2 million boda boda as proposed by the Local Government Finance Commission.
Isaac Musumba, Chairperson of the Local Government Finance Commission, announced the plan during the weekend.
Speaking to our reporter in an exclusive interview today, the riders say the government is double taxing them, something they say will affect their business that they are already struggling with high fuel prices and spare parts.
Edward Rugumayo the chairperson Fort Portal boda boda riders association, says the government is being unfair because the boda riders have always fought for themselves whenever they face challenges.
Rugumayo stated that the president had phased out the daily 10,000sh taxes from them in 2002, due to challenges they have been facing, thus vowing not to adhere with the proposed tax until the president denounces it.
Robert Nyakana, a boda rider, stated that the government should have consulted them before making any step adding that this is the bad timing following the inflation in the country.
