The Catholic Diocese of Fort Portal is in mourning following the death of Rev. Fr. Bernardine Nganzi Amooti, who passed away in the early hours of Holy Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Nsambya Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment.
Announcing the sad news, the Chancellor of the Diocese, Rev. Fr. John Tumuhairwe, conveyed the condolences of Bishop Robert Muhiirwa, who expressed deep sorrow at the loss of the priest.
Fr. Nganzi will be laid to rest on April 7, 2026 Easter Wednesday. Burial ceremonies will begin with Holy Mass at Virika Cathedral, where the faithful are expected to gather in large numbers to pay their last respects.
Earlier yesterday, The Parish Priest Virika Cathedral Parish, Rev. Fr. Titus Winyi Abwoli, informed Christians during Easter Sunday Mass that the late priest’s body is currently at Rwibale Mortuary. He called on all parishioners and well-wishers to actively participate in preparations to give Fr. Nganzi a dignified send-off adding that before Wednesday, the parishioners will have special prayers for their colleague and body viewing at the Cathedral on Easter Tuesday.
Ordained on August 7, 1988, Fr. Nganzi dedicated decades of faithful service to the Church. He was also the elder biological brother of Rev. Fr. Stanislaus Birungi Atwooki (Ekisweet), a fellow priest of the same diocese.
May his soul rest in peace, Amen
