Mugusu Market in Mugusu Town Council, Kabarole District, is at risk of closure due to poor sanitation conditions, according to Kabarole District Health Officer, Dr. Stephen Kalyegiira.
Speaking during the Kabarole District Fourth Quarter Coordination Meeting organized by the district water office in partnership with the Ministry of Water and Environment, IRC, and other stakeholders held today at kitumba district headquarters, Dr. Kalyegiira expressed concern over the lack of functional sanitation facilities at the market.
He revealed that the market currently has no usable toilet facilities, forcing some traders and market users to practice open defecation, while others resort to using polythene bags to dispose of human waste.
According to the health officer, the situation poses a serious public health threat and increases the risk of outbreaks of sanitation-related diseases within the community.
Dr. Kalyegiira warned that if leaders and authorities in Mugusu Town Council fail to urgently address the sanitation challenges, the market could face closure to protect public health.
He called upon local leaders, development partners, and the community to work together to improve sanitation infrastructure and ensure the market meets the required public health standards.
