Pope Leo XIV has released his first encyclical with a call on the world to ensure that artificial intelligence serves humanity and does not concentrate power in the hands of a few.
In an important document, titled “Magnifica humanitas”, published yesterday, May 25, marked 135 years since Pope Leo XIII’s historic encyclical Rerum Novarum.
Magnifica Humanitas
In the letter, the Holy Father warns that while technology is not evil, it is never neutral and must always be guided by moral responsibility and the common good.
He emphasizes that every human person has inherent dignity given by God, which must never be reduced to productivity or economic value. The Pope also stresses the importance of protecting human life, promoting justice, and ensuring that new technologies benefit all people, especially the poor and vulnerable.
Pope Leo XIV calls for global cooperation to regulate artificial intelligence, urging leaders to prevent its misuse in warfare, economic exploitation, and social control.
He further highlights the dignity of work, warning that technological progress should not lead to unemployment or the exploitation of workers.
The Holy Father also appeals for truth in communication, responsible use of digital platforms, and stronger education systems to help young people think critically in the digital age.
Accordingly, Pope Leo XIV invites Christians and all people of goodwill to reject a “culture of power” and instead build what he calls a “civilization of love,” rooted in peace, justice, and respect for human dignity.
