Christians yesterday gathered at Virika Cathedral in Fort Portal City in large numbers, waving palm branches to commemorate Palm Sunday.
Presiding over Mass that commenced with a procession from the Virika Adminisration offices, Rt. Rev. Robert Muhiirwa Akiiki has urged the faithful to reflect on the significance of the palms as a symbol of victory, noting that Christ overcame fear and suffering, which is why He was welcomed in a triumphant entry into Jerusalem.
He likened the palm branches to the joy and celebration of a football team after winning a trophy, emphasizing the victory of Christ. Its from this background that the Bishops called upon the faithful to hold special the blessed palms and look at them to be reminded of victory till next lenten season.
The Bishop also noted that Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Christ’s mission of redemption, calling on Christians to remain committed in faith and to trust in Him during times of trial.
He further encouraged believers to embrace humility and obedience, following the example of Christ, who remained faithful to the will of His Father.
As Christians enter Holy Week, Bishop Muhiirwa urged them to unite their personal struggles and those of others with the Holy Cross through prayer and reflection
Meanwhile, Kebirungi Annet, a Christian at Virika Cathedral, said she could not miss the Palm Sunday celebration, describing it as an important moment that connects her more deeply to the life and victory of Christ.
