Fort Portal City’s ambitious plans to expand its urban road network have received a major boost with landlords in Njara ward, Central Division rallying behind city council’s efforts to open and widen key access roads, despite resistance from a section of local residents
The Central Division Mayor, Jorum Bintamanya, alongside political and technical team took the sensitization message straight to the grassroots on Tuesday and held a community meeting with residents and village chairpersons
The meeting came days after some residents opposed the widening and opening of three critical routes, including Huda road, Kanyiginya road and Ali Kamuhanda road
In the heavily attended meeting, Mayor Bintamanya educated the anxious residents on the specific land laws governing the opening of existing public roads. He emphasized that infrastructure development requires shared sacrifice, reminding them that an expanded road network directly increases the value of their property and unlocks economic opportunities for the entire community
Elizabeth Kengonzi, the deputy mayor, urged all rebellious residents to cooperate with the engineering teams, stating that the long-term benefits of the new roads outweigh the temporary disruptions.
Abdul Kamurasi the LC2 chairperson for Njara ward said, modernizing roads should be non-negotiable if the city is to achieve strategic urban planning goals.
Alice Komuntaro the acting Central Division Town Clerk emphasized the importance of expanding the road network saying it is vital for unlocking trade, improving emergency access and boosting property value.
