Two concerned Batooro have asked the Fort Portal High Court to stop tomorrow’s coronation of Prince Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as the new King of Tooro, in a last-minute petition that leaves the ceremony hanging in the balance.
Derick Alitugabira and Juliet Kangume, together with Walezi Wa Katiba, an organization that promotes the rule of law and good governance, who ran to court yesterday evening are seeking an interim order restraining the installation scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, 2026.
Through their lawyers, Messrs Thomas and Michael Advocates, the applicants want the court to suspend all coronation proceedings until their main suit is resolved. That suit challenges the legitimacy of Prince Nyabongo’s selection.
According to court filings, the petitioners argue that the selection process went against the explicit wishes of the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. They contend that the late king left a written Will stating that his son should succeed him, or, if the son was unavailable, his cousin.
They further sue Former Tooro Queen Mother Best Kemigisa Akiiki and the Attorney General to produce the alleged heir.
