The Bishop of Fort Portal Catholic Diocese, Rt. Rev. Dr. Robert Muhiirwa, has urged learners to embrace the spirit of detachment from material possessions, saying happiness does not depend on the things one owns.
Preaching during the Laudato Si Green Festival held at Saaka Holy Cross Novitiate in Fort Portal City, Bishop Muhiirwa encouraged learners to emulate St. Francis of Assisi by learning to live with few possessions while remaining happy and joyful.
His Lordship, said young people should understand that material possessions are not the source of true happiness and that living a simple life can bring greater joy.
The Bishop also cautioned learners against being influenced by fashion trends and products promoted by industries and factories targeting young people, urging them to think carefully before embracing everything introduced into the market.
He further encouraged learners to study hard, remain focused on their academic goals and avoid distractions that could mislead them and hinder their success.
Meanwhile, the Fort Portal City Woman Member of Parliament, Linda Irene Mugisa, called on learners to embrace charity by helping needy people in their communities and schools.
Mugisa urged the learners to use their talents positively to contribute to the country’s development while taking responsibility for protecting the environment.
She also cautioned learners against misusing social media, encouraging them to use digital platforms responsibly by sharing messages of hope, peace and encouragement instead of spreading hatred in pursuit of online content and popularity.
